PM-JAY is one of the largest government-funded healthcare schemes in the world, often referred to as “Modicare.” It provides financial protection against healthcare costs for vulnerable families.
Coverage: It covers over 10 crore (100 million) families, which translates to about 50 crore (500 million) people or roughly 40% of India’s population.
Insurance Coverage: Each family is entitled to an annual health cover of Rs. 5 lakh (500,000) for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization, meaning it covers major illnesses, surgeries, and specialist consultations.
Cashless and Paperless: PM-JAY is designed to provide cashless and paperless treatment at empaneled public and private hospitals across India.
Scope: It covers around 1,400 medical packages, including surgery, hospital treatment, day care, and follow-up care for critical diseases.
Eligibility: The scheme targets economically disadvantaged families based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data, without any enrollment fee.
The second component of Ayushman Bharat focuses on creating Health and Wellness Centers to provide comprehensive primary healthcare services.
Target: The goal is to establish 1.5 lakh (150,000) HWCs across the country by upgrading existing sub-centers and primary health centers.
Services: HWCs offer a range of preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative services. This includes non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health services, immunizations, free medicines, and diagnostic services.
Focus on Preventive Care: HWCs are aimed at improving preventive healthcare, addressing lifestyle diseases, and reducing the burden on secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities.
1. Affordable Healthcare: PM-JAY provides free treatment for economically weaker sections, protecting them from the high costs of major treatments.
2. Financial Security: The scheme reduces out-of-pocket expenses, helping families avoid financial hardship due to health issues.
3. Increased Access to Quality Healthcare: The scheme allows beneficiaries to access quality healthcare services, especially those in remote or rural areas.
4. Boost to Private Healthcare Sector: Private hospitals empaneled under PM-JAY also cater to patients, expanding healthcare access across India.
While Ayushman Bharat has been a positive step toward universal health coverage, it faces certain challenges:
Awareness and Access: In some areas, beneficiaries are unaware of the scheme or lack access to empaneled hospitals.
Hospital Infrastructure: The quality of healthcare infrastructure in rural areas still needs improvement.
Fraud Prevention: Ensuring transparency and preventing fraud in the scheme is a constant challenge.
Ayushman Bharat has played a significant role in improving healthcare access and reducing medical poverty in India. Millions of families have already benefited from the scheme, making it a crucial initiative in achieving India’s goal of universal healthcare.
